Michigan MAGIC
Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) are among the most commonly used central venous catheter (CVC) in contemporary medical practice. The rise in popularity of PICCs reflects several advantages, including safe insertion and growing availability of vascular access nurses that offer convenient bedside insertion. However, PICCs are also associated with important complications, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI). Judicious use of PICCs to balance these risks against benefits is therefore necessary.
