Roosevelt, gave one of the most important speeches of the 20th century: the “Four Freedoms” speech. At this time America was still not at war, unlike Europe and Asia. In 1943, Norman Rockwell took inspiration from this speech to create four paintings illustrating the “Four Freedoms”. During the war, these paintings travelled the length and breadth of the United States, raising 130 million dollars for the war effort. For the first time ever, these four paintings, which are among the most important and best-known examples of 20th century American painting, are travelling outside the United States. They are being showcased alongside other works of art at Caen Mémorial Museum to mark the 75th anniversary of the Allied Landings and the Battle of Normandy.
