PRESS (Predictive Swallowing Score) is a prediction tool applicable to people who suffered an ischemic stroke leading to dysphagia and impairment of oral intake. Given some clinical characteristics, it provides estimates of the probability to recover functional oral intake within a user-defined time period (up to 40 days). PRESS can provide time-dependent predictions for dysphagia recovery after stroke. It might help guide clinical decisions in dysphagic stroke patients involving the placement o
f feeding tubes (nasogastric tube feeding or percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy feeding).PRESS should only be used in people• who have suffered ischemic stroke AND• who have impaired oral intakePRESS should NOT be used in people with • pre-existent dysphagia OR• recurrent stroke within the prediction time-frame OR• late hospital admission > 48 hours after stroke onset.
